Last time we looked at our building site as well as work getting underway. Today we’re exposing our style for the new house.
Contemporary
We started working on the plans back in January of 2017, wanting to style something more contemporary after living in a more traditional style home for the last 20 years.
We visited a number of Self-Build shows in Belfast in addition to travelled to the NEC in Birmingham for the weekend to take in that significant exhibition too.
After many months of immersing yourself in home style it can begin to take over your life a bit. when you hear yourself mention the word ‘vernacular’ or begin to talk about exactly how ‘this area truly works’ you understand you have officially overdosed on Grand styles as well as it’s time to take a step back
Design, Review, Improve, Repeat
It was an iterative process, moving ahead with each satisfying with 2020. The final few sessions took location with the plans laid out on the floor of our old home as we hammered out the details. These were the meetings where things moved ahead fastest as we zoned in on the final design.
We tried to distill the idea down to a type that we liked however likewise one that satisfied all our practical requirements. It was likewise important to have a fairly simple shape that was simple (and affordable) to build.
2020 designers created this lovely render of the building as well as while it’s a bit idealistic in regards to the setting as well as that glass to window frame ratio, it does provide an concept of the look we are heading for.
There have been lots of expense engineering tweaks since this render was produced too, we have eliminated the stonework above the flat roof, between the 2 barns for example, however we’ve worked difficult to retain the primary style aspects while keeping it within our budget.
More Renders
Here are a few more renders showing the extruded eves that produce the overhang at the front, designed to enable solar gain in the winter when the sun is low, however produce some shade in the summertime when the sun is at its highest.
The glass gable at the front is a 5.5m wide slider as well as there’s an extra 5m one on the west side of the kitchen area / dining / living space barn.
As well as these 2 big openings, the skylights will be motorised so we can dump any type of excess warm in the summertime too. Well, that’s the plan anyway.
We’ve gone for integrated garages once again (we’re among what seems like a small minority that puts their cars and trucks in the garage every night). The capability to drive directly into your garage on a wet day as well as head directly into the home is something we liked in the last place.
Inspiration?
It was a couple of months after we had finalised our style that it suddenly hit me why it looked so familiar. No we didn’t style our home to show the Automated house logo, not even subconsciously. Well, as far as I can tell
